Symposium:"The Optimal Bearing Solution"

Dr. K.J. Hamelynck had, as the inventor, a lot to tell about the ideas behind the surface engineering of articulating surfaces. Design characteristics optimizing initial stability, preclinical testing and his own, very first clinical experiences were presented

Dr. Wolf Drescher, assistant professor at the orthopaedic department of the University of Aachen,Germany shared with the delegates his experience on various treating options of avascular femoral head necrosis and his first experience with the Accis Hip resurfacing arthroplasty.

Dr. Wolf Christof Witzleb, (previously a the University of Dresden Germany, currently at the Endocenter in Dresden) as one of the early adepts of use of the McMinn resurfacing hip arthroplasty shared with the audience his long experience with several types of resurfacing hips. At the second day of the symposium Dr Witzleb presented the delegates "the trick and trades" of finding the optimal solution for the younger, active patients

Dr David Woodnutt, Swansea UK, one of the Accis pioneers presented his clincial results of large head arthroplasty. The second day of the symposium he demonstrated his ideas of how to predict component wear related to the design and his experience with the Midhead Resection arthroplasty.

Dr. Torsten Mumme , from the Orthopädische Praxisklinik Neuss, Germany invited the audience to think about an alternative way of preventing the use of standard stems hip implants in young patients. His first experiences with the Aida short stem implant show that this might be a viable alternative for resurfacing arthroplasty

Dr. Shahabaz Patil from Morriston University Hospital in Swansea Wales presented the results of the multi-centre prospective study on metal ion release with ceramic engineered implants and the current comparative study of ceramic engineered and non-coated implants.
